NOVA University Lisbon mourns the death of the former director of the National School of Public Health

"Brilliant mathematician and statistician" was decorated by the Presidency of the Republic in March

It was with enormous regret and consternation that NOVA received the news of the death of Professor Carla Nunes, a specialist in statistics, epidemiology and public health, and director of the ENSP-NOVA National School of Health until September 2021.

"NOVA University Lisbon is grateful for the commitment, determination and energy of Professor Carla Nunes in the development and internationalisation of the public health area at NOVA and, especially, in the strengthening of the role of ENSP at the service of society, namely in these very difficult times we are going through in 2020 and 2021", underlines the Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, who sends his deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Full Professor of Statistics, Carla Nunes was also part of the Public Health Research Centre (CISP) and the Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC).

Her enormous contribution to the clarification of public opinion during the pandemic was publicly recognised last March when she was among the 13 specialists decorated by the President of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has also expressed his regret for the death of the "brilliant mathematician and professor of statistics".

"It was with deep regret that the President of the Republic learned of the death of Carla Nunes, brilliant mathematician and professor of statistics, who made such a valuable contribution to the fight against the pandemic of covid-19 in Portugal, which had the opportunity to decorate last March, as Commander of the Order of Merit," reads the website of the Presidency.
