NOVA’s research in response to the sustainability challenges of the tourism sector

NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA), through its Nova Tourism and Hospitality platform (“Toho”) and the NOVA School of Science and Technology are collaborating under the project “Sustainable tourism: a better future for [with] everyone” of Turismo de Portugal financed by the Environmental Fund (Fundo Ambiental).

Following the protocol signed by NOVA and Turismo de Portugal in October 2020, two actions are currently taking place through which NOVA contributes to the response of the tourism sector to the urgency of the sustainability challenges on a global, European and national scale.

The ongoing actions, the results of which will be presented in the short term,  are as follows:

Sustainable Construction in Tourism Developments

Based on the most recent technical and scientific knowledge and considering the guidelines contained in the transition agenda for the Portuguese construction sector of the Action Plan for the Circular Economy and the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Program, the action aims to produce a guide to good practices on sustainable construction in tourism developments (new construction and rehabilitation / requalification). This guide will propose and discuss ways to optimize the eco-efficiency of construction, operation, maintenance, conservation, and rehabilitation in different types of tourism developments.

Carbon neutrality in Tourism Developments

The tourism activity faces a double challenge in the area of climate change: contributing to the carbon neutrality assumed by Portugal and Europe for the middle of this century and adapting in order to reduce its vulnerability to climatic events that limit its services.

The project will develop contents on options that can lead tourism units to carbon neutrality, focusing on hotels. The estimation of greenhouse gas emissions, the identification of potential measures to reduce emissions and its cost, and the identification of offset emission options, namely through the acquisition of emission credits, are the main components of the project.
