The Vice-Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Professor Elvira Fortunato, was the personality appointed by Banco de Portugal to represent Portugal and collaborate with the European Central Bank in the selection of new Euro banknote designs.
Professor Elvira Fortunato will, therefore, integrate a small team at European level who will be responsible for giving an opinion on the topics that should be included in future notes, with the aim of bringing them closer to all citizens, regardless of age and context. The choice will then be submitted to the ECB, which guaranteed that it is open to suggestions “as diverse as history, natural and social sciences, visual arts and technology”.
In a second moment, the process will also count with the participation of the citizens of the Eurozone who will be called to give their opinion on the selected themes.
The new banknotes are expected to be known in 2024.
