Researchers from NOVA National School of Public Health question UK decision to exclude Portugal from touristic corridors

Public Health specialists at the NOVA National School of Public Health, Professor Alexandre Abrantes and researcher Vasco Ricoca Peixoto, consider that United Kingdom's decision to exclude Portugal from its safe tourist corridors "lacks technical and scientific rigor and transparency".

According to the researchers, whose analysis was reported in British publications such as The Telegraph, the United Kingdom disregards in the risk assessment important indicators such as geographic distribution, mortality rate, testing, hospital admissions, among others.

The main criteria underlying UK's decision is the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days which, according to Alexandre Abrantes and Vasco Ricoca Peixoto, does not correctly reflect the seriousness of the epidemic in the country.

The researchers say that "lack of such approach led the UK to adopt an inadequate COVID-19 related travel policy that, without contributing in a relevant way to prevent transmission, has had a significantly negative impact at the socio-economic, political and diplomatic levels".
