WIinners of the Economic Journalism Prize 2022 announced

The 16th edition of this partnership between Santander and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa awarded the grand prize to an article published in Exame magazine and two other works in the newspaper Público

The article "Is the Small Investor Taming the Bull?", written by journalists Nuno Aguiar and Rui Barroso, from Exame magazine, is the big winner of the 16th edition of the Economic Journalism Prize, a partnership between Santander and NOVA University of Lisbon.

Published in March 2021, the work shows the massive return of small retail investors, justified by the combination of several factors: "commission-free and 'gamified' platforms, popular social networks, lack of conservative alternatives and a constantly rising market environment". The journalists give the example of the GameStop case, which has become a symbol of this new reality.

In the Financial Markets category, winning the Grand Prize, the journalists will receive a cash prize of 10,000 euros.

In the area of Company Management and Business, the journalist Victor Ferreira, from Público newspaper, was awarded the prize for his work "Coelima: the textile that was too big to fall", which portrays the history of the development of Coelima, which three times (1991, 2011 and 2021) threatened insolvency and resisted all those attempts.

In the Sustainability and Business Innovation category, "A lifetime on minimum wage. "A constant headache" was elected the best article in this area, in which journalist Natália Faria, from the Público newspaper, narrates the daily life of three women, in their 40s, who since they started working have received the national minimum wage, having had tiny increments over time.

Having won their respective categories, each of them receives a cash prize of 5,000 euros.

The ceremony took place today, and was attended by Pedro Castro e Almeida, CEO of Santander Portugal, and João Sàágua, Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

This was the 16th edition of the Economic Journalism Award, which received around 50 applications. The works were assessed by a jury composed by: Luís Baptista (Executive President of the jury and Director of NOVA FCSH), Carla Jorge, Cátia Batista (NOVA SBE), Conceição Zagalo, Helena Garrido, Paulo Pinho (NOVA SBE) and Pedro Coelho (NOVA FCSH).
