Four researchers of NOVA awarded with the Medal of Scientific Merit

Professors Cândido Pinto Ricardo (ITQB NOVA), João Vasconcelos Costa (NOVA IHMT), Jorge Crespo (NOVA FCSH) and Maria Arménia Carrondo (ITQB NOVA), were distinguished at the 2021 Science Meeting with the Medal of Scientific Merit.

The Medal of Scientific Merit is an initiative established by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education that recognizes “national individuals who, due to their high professional qualities and the fulfillment of their duty, distinguished themselves by their valuable and exceptional contribution to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal".

The Medals were awarded at the Opening of the 2021 Science Meeting, on June 28, at the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa.

Cândido Pinto Ricardo

PhD in Plant Biochemistry from Cambridge University.
He stood out for the development of methodologies for collecting information on the genome of the cork oak.
Researcher at the Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry at ITQB and Professor Emeritus at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon

João Vasconcelos Costa

Specialist in Molecular Biology and Virology
He was director of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and of the Molecular Virology Laboratory of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. Full Professor at NOVA University Lisbon.

Jorge Crespo

Full Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, of which he was Director from 1996 to 2005.
He founded and coordinated the Center for the Study of Portuguese Ethnology and was Director of Arquivos da Memória.
He was President of the Portuguese Association of Anthropology in the 1990s. He founded and directed the Ludens magazine and served on the board of directors of the Revista de História Económica e Social.

Maria Arménia Carrondo

PhD in Chemical Crystallography at Imperial College, London She distinguished herself in the area of ​​Structural Genomics. Researcher and professor at the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB) of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa where she coordinated the Macromolecular Crystallography Unit and the Structural Genomics Laboratory at ITQB.
She was President of the Foundation for Science and Technology between 2014 and 2016. She was Vice-Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and Vice-Director of ITQB.
