Maria Arménia Carrondo to head Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia

Maria Arménia Carrondo, head of the Macromolecular Crystallography Unit at NOVA's Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB), is the new president of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology).

A distinguished scientist in the field of protein crystallography with over 150 published articles, Maria Arménia Carrondo is an EMBO member since 2000. She was vice-director of ITQB (1996-2005) and later vice-rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (2007-2013). Throughout her career, she has served in numerous scientific committees and evaluation boards. Among other national and international awards, she received the European Medal for Bioinorganic Chemistry in 2004 and the Prémio Câmara Pestana 2008.
More recently, she was one of the twenty women scientists portrayed in the exhibition "Mulheres na Ciência", inaugurated last March at Pavilhão do Conhecimento, in Lisbon.
