A year of celebration - 50 years of NOVA

Once upon a time, in 1973, a new university was born in Lisbon to be open and accessible to all, in an innovative way - NOVA. Now that it is celebrating its 50th anniversary, what we want is to continue to be young and creative in the way we teach, research and create value for society, leaving an indelible mark for future generations.

2023 will be a year of celebration with a varied program of activities:

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Bases Project

In partnership with MNAC and the University of Porto, the project consists of exhibiting works of art - vertical galleries - on NOVA campuses promoting an art circuit.

Urban Art at NOVA

In partnership with the Urban Art Gallery and the Lisbon City Council, a work of urban art will be created by young artists from the NOVA OU's, through a program of artistic residencies. This project is part of the MURO Festival programme.


FEBRUARY

February 15th

Universities as Agents of Change for Gender Equality | Rectory

The conference, organized within the scope of SPEAR, brings together speakers representing different universities participating in projects funded by the European Commission within the scope of promoting Gender Equality. (+ info)

February 27th - March 31st

The Great Evils and the Great Remedies, NMS Old Print Book | Organization: NMS

The exhibition features a collection of 352 works, mostly donated by private individuals, the oldest being from the 17th century. Medicine is the main theme, but the publications also address topics such as Anatomy, Botany or Zoology. (+ info)

Chat GPT & AI Debate: “Revolutionizing Higher Education Through Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT” | Nova SBE

Nova SBE explored the potential of ChatGPT and how it is carried out through a debate. It was a morning of debates, ideas, and real-time demonstrations of ChatGPT that brought together Dean Pedro Oliveira, Vice-Dean Ana Balcão Reis, Nova SBE Data Science Knowledge Center founder and academic co-director Leid Zejnilovic and Nova SBE students. 

 

March 30th

Solidarity Concert for Turkey and Syria | Nova SBE

Nova SBE promoted a solidarity concert with performances by Salvador Sobral, Luísa Sobral, Janeiro, and Milhanas. A"Re-Humanize the World" initiative from the Estoril Conferences. The proceedings from the box office were meant to support the education of the population affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, which victimized more than 45 thousand people.

April 17th and 18th

AI Robotics in Healthcare: A Challenge for Law and Tech? | Organization: NOVA School of Law

This conference will address topics related to the use of robotics based on artificial intelligence in the field of health, including data protection, robotics, digital governance, medical deontology, and intellectual property rights (+ info). (Location: NOVA School of Law)

1st Anniversary of the Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute | Nova SBE

Nova SBE and the Haddad Foundation invited their entire community to celebrate the first anniversary of the Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute and its space on campus to celebrate one year of the space and recognize and award its stars. (+ info)

National Congress of Tropical Medicine | IHMT NOVA

Oeiras hosts NOVA's 50th anniversary | ITQB NOVA

The event consists of an activity developed within the scope of the Open Science to Oeiras program with students from the municipality, which aims to make known various organic units of NOVA, its courses and research projects. (Location: Temple of Poetry)

 

Lisbon-Almada in the 22nd century: FCTense utopias | FCT NOVA

Exhibition that will compare the Portuguese utopias of the 20th century about the city of Lisbon in the year 2000 with the visions of the 21st century about the reality of the Lisbon-Almada territory in the 22nd century. The departments will be challenged to come up with solutions to issues of mobility, pollution, ways of working and consumption. As part of the EUTOPIA week, which will take place this year at NOVA, a meeting was held between the Rectors of Portuguese Universities to reflect on the future of the University in Europe.

6th Paradox & Plurality Annual Meeting | Nova SBE

The Amélia de Mello Foundation is organizing the 6th edition of the Paradox and Pluralism Annual Meeting. The aim of this meeting is to explore how arts, artists, and artwork leverage paradoxes to attract popular attention and, at the same time, go against prevailing opinion, providing a necessary critique of the embedded power of the status quo and discovering new possibilities for expression. 

 

June 28th-July 1st

Jazz Festival | Rectory

For five days, the festival happens in Campolide Campus with the best jazz productions from the Portuguese avant-garde and with an international program and promotion, which will be curated and produced by Clean Feed Records.

Estoril Conferences| Nova SBE 

The 8th edition of the Estoril Conferences, jointly organised and hosted by Nova SBE and NOVA Medical School, addressed broad themes in line with the main global challenges facing the world. This collaboration reinforces the transformative power of innovation and technology in health, reflecting on today's main challenges, promoting debate and calling for action, involving world leaders, focusing on the theme "Re-Humanising Our World".

The future of knowledge | organisation: Rectory 

Exhibition of illustrations made by Planeta Tangerina on the theme of sustainability, which can be seen in various places in the Lisbon metropolitan area - squares, streets and parks in the four municipalities where Nova is present, as well as on the Cascais train line, which connects several Nova spaces - as part of the daily life of people who travel around the city for a few weeks and can thus reflect with us on these issues.

Lisbon-Carcavelos Art Train 

Artistic intervention in three carriages of the Cascais line train, which connects several NOVA campuses, with the vinyling of works by artists Malibu Ninjas and Kampus, curated by Galeria de Arte Urbana and integrated into the MURO Festival.

Conference "Teaching Medicine in Change" | Organisation: NMS, IHMT NOVA, ENSP NOVA 

The conference brought together people related to the teaching of medicine, providing an extremely important debate in the current situation in our country. 

 

28th of September 

NOVA Music Festival | Nova SBE Student Union 

The NOVA Music Festival returned to celebrate the beginning of the academic year, focusing on Portuguese music and giving a stage to emerging bands and artists on the national scene. 

For the second year, the Nova SBE Students' Union was organised at the Nova SBE Campus, in Carcavelos, with the support of the Rectory, for all students of the NOVA University Lisbon

   

28 September to 27 October 

Almada Negreiros Exhibition | Rectory 

On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the birth of Almada Negreiros, the Universidade Nova de Lisboa has organised a series of initiatives to celebrate the anniversary: a conference, an exhibition and a reading by Coletivo A Sul. 

A special highlight is the exhibition "Almada Negreiros - 130 years", which includes documents, drawings and works by the artist, in a collection of various materials that can be consulted and researched at the Centro de Estudos e Documentação Almada Negreiros - Sarah Affonso.

Nova SBE celebrated the 5th anniversary of the inauguration of Campus Carcavelos, an open campus concept that brings together the entire community, from young students to executives, with many educational and social activities.

VI International Conference, "Challenges of Vaccination throughout Life" | Organisation: NOVAsaúde Chronic Diseases and Infections 

The objective was to promote the presentation of new scientific achievements and the development of interdisciplinary collaborations in different formats and perspectives, allowing for broad interaction and discussion. 

 

22 October to 9 November 

BRASIL CYCLE AT NOVA - Tribute to Gilberto Gil | Rectory

In the days leading up to and following the ceremony scheduled for 31 October, NOVA presents the Brasil na NOVA cycle - in honour of Gilberto Gil, a series of concerts and initiatives designed to echo and reflect on Gil's work and its reverberations from the university as a space for interrogation.

Honoris Causa Gilberto Gil at the NOVA University Lisbon 

The award marks the celebration of the University's 50th anniversary and recognises Gilberto Gil's extraordinary contribution to international culture and the legacy he has left behind over several decades.

Foundation of the NOVA University Lisbon | Organisation: NOVA FCSH 

Screening of the documentary "The Film: NOVA, 50 years of innovation", which covers the years between 1973 and 1977, interweaving the history of the creation of the University with the history of the country. There will also be an exhibition of multimedia material and photographs (by António Júlio Duarte) on the memory of the University and its present day. (Location: Rectory) 

 

29 November

NOVA's Day  

Opening of the 50th-anniversary play 

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Nova on the Campolide campus, a work of art curated by Ar.co (which will also celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023) and written by Maria Ana Vasco Costa entitled "Bodies of water" will be installed in the garden in front of the Rectory.
