The President of the General Council, in the exercise of her legal and statutory powers, will shortly call for elections to the General Council. The electoral calendar will be announced as soon as possible.
Considering the proximity of the end of the term of office of the current members of the General Council, careful consideration was given to the most appropriate time to call elections for this body.
In December, the General Council approved a proposal to amend the University’s Statutes, which has a direct impact on the General Council’s electoral process. This revision was the result of work carried out over a period of approximately three years, involving the wider NOVA community and representing a significant step forward in the best interests of the University.
The proposal introduces significant improvements to the governance model and the electoral process, and corrects several non-conformities identified in multiple articles of the Statutes currently in force, reinforcing their compliance with the Legal Framework for Higher Education Institutions (RJIES).
The Statutes must be reviewed by the University’s Board of Trustees. For this reason, it was deemed prudent to wait for the conclusion of the statutory process in order to bring the call for elections to the General Council into line with the new regulatory framework.
As the Board of Trustees has not yet had the opportunity to review the Statutes, the General Council believes that, under these circumstances, it should proceed with the electoral process, ensuring the normal academic and institutional life of NOVA.
