NOVA Health Talks: Health and Inequality – how to break cycles

In this episode, we discuss the inequalities that persist in access, quality and health outcomes, even in developed countries. With the participation of Joana Alves, researcher at the National School of Public Health, and Isabel Craveiro, professor at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, we reflect on the social determinants that influence health, such as education, gender, income, housing conditions and geographical context, and analyse the vicious cycles between poverty, disease and lower education, which limit opportunities and affect generations. We also discussed the differences between urban and rural areas, the impact of public policies and the need to take preventive action, strengthening primary care, literacy and healthy behaviours. An episode that shows how health depends on much more than medical care and requires intersectoral responses to reduce inequalities.
