José Fragata has been Vice-Rector of NOVA University Lisbon since September 14, 2017. He is responsible for the area of Health and the coordinator of the strategic platform NOVAhealth.
Professor at NOVA University Lisbon since its foundation, he holds a PhD on Medicine, with habilitation (agregação) in Surgery, and is Full Professor of Surgery at NOVA Medical School (NMS|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas) where he coordinates the Teaching and Research Area of Surgery and Human Morphology.
He has a vast curriculum as a clinical, researcher and professor, developed in parallel with his long national and international career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. He currently runs a large hospital department at the University Hospital Center of Central Lisbon, combining clinical activity with academia and management.
At the helm of NOVAhealth, he seeks to guide NOVA's extensive interdisciplinary collaborative research in the areas of Biology, Medicine and Population Health, towards solving concrete problems of society and value creation - in line with the strategy of NOVA which, by promoting talent, undertaking digital transformation and internationalization, aims to give an increased meaning to university, through its connection to society.
