The Fulbright Programme, which operates in more than 150 countries, was created in the United States in 1946 at the suggestion of Senator J. William Fulbright, to promote the exchange of ideas and the search for solutions to global problems through international exchanges of students and teachers. In Portugal, the programme is managed by the Fulbright Commission, and since its inception in 1960, it has awarded annual grants to students and researchers, both Portuguese and American, in various academic fields.
