NOVA Foundation Programme

Students from outside the European Union who have finished high school and wish to pursue their higher education studies in Europe can choose to attend NOVA Foundation Programme before applying to a bachelor's degree or integrated masters.

Bachelors and Integrated Masters

International students from non- European Union countries have the opportunity to apply to a bachelor or integrated master’s degree under a specific system of access – the International Student Statute.

You can benefit from this statute if you fulfill the following conditions:

  • If you do not have Portuguese nationality;
  • If you are not a national from a Member State of the European Union;
  • If you are not legally residing in Portugal until the 31st of August of the year in which you intend to enroll in higher education for more than two years, continuously, and if you are not family of foreign citizens that hold a resident permit for more than two years;
  • If you don’t intend to enroll in Higher Education through special regimes;
  • If you Hold: a Qualification giving access to Higher Education, meaning any diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority in the country in which it was awarded; or a Diploma of Portuguese secondary school or equivalent degree

The school year in Portugal runs from September to June.

I am a Brazilian citizen. How can I apply to the Medicine program as an International Student?

In Portugal, the access to the Medicine program as International Student is not possible.

Which are the requirements to apply to the University in Portugal as an International Student?

You can study at NOVA as an International Student. The application is made directly in the NOVA School you wish to attend and through the Special Access for International Students. Each  school annually sets the calendar for applications, the number of vacancies and the selection criteria. The tuition fees can vary according to the program.

When does the school year begin?

In Portugal the school year runs from September to June.

At Universidade NOVA de Lisboa the first semester starts in September and the second semester starts in February and ends in June.
