It is with deep regret that the Rector of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, João Sàágua, announces the death of Nuno Júdice, Retired Professor at NOVA FCSH, former researcher and founding member of the Institute of Literature and Tradition Studies (IELT)
Born in 1949, the Algarve poet Nuno Júdice stood out as a novelist, essayist, playwright, critic, translator and university professor, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary Portuguese poetry and fiction.
In addition to poetry, Nuno Júdice also dedicated himself to romance, short stories and theater, revisiting the classics, especially the romantic ones, and reserving a considerable part of the influence of modernism in his work.
Throughout his career, he held important cultural roles, as Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Portugal in Paris (1997-2004) and director of the Camões Institute in Paris, among others. Furthermore, he was a renowned literary commissioner, having prominent participation in events such as the Seville Universal Exhibition (1992) and the Frankfurt Book Fair (1997).
Nuno Júdice was a founding member of the Institute for Literature and Tradition Studies (IELT) and dedicated himself to teaching French and Portuguese literature at NOVA FCSH, influencing several generations of students.
Among the many awards he has received throughout his career, we highlight the Reina Sofia prize for Ibero-American poetry (2013), the Poets of the Latin World prize in Mexico (2014), the Juan Crisostomo Doria prize for the Humanities of the University Autonomous Region of the State of Hidalgo (2017), among others. He has also received international recognition with the Pablo Neruda Poetry Prize (1975) and the Argana Poetry Prize, from the Maison de la Poésie in Morocco (2015), among others.
