Policies and Regulations

NOVA University Lisbon follows specific policies and regulations, which define and guide its Research and Development (R&D) activities.


The Strategic Research Council (Conselho Estratégico de Investigação – CEI) is an advisory body to the Rector and aims to promote research in interdisciplinary areas and provide ideal conditions for collaborative research and enhance impact, aligned with both the European Agenda for Knowledge and Innovation and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Strategic Research Council is chaired by the Vice-Rector for Research and includes representatives from all of NOVA’s academic units, recognised for their competence in scientific and technological research.

Research Policy

As a Higher Education Public Institution, NOVA has the purpose of serving society, both locally and globally, through its knowledge, excellency of education and research, allowing for the value creation socially and economically. In order to fulfil its triple mission: Education, Value Creation, and Research, NOVA has been investing in a collaborative culture within the University as well as with strategic partnerships with other institutions, which are highly specialised, interdisciplinary and of international importance. These efforts have the goal of creating innovative results, with recognised academic and social impact and with the potential for benefiting society.

Universidade NOVA de Lisboa develops its research activities based on ethical and integrity principles. The Ethics Council of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (CEUNL) has the mission of promoting reflection and contributing to the definition of guidelines aimed at consolidating a policy to safeguard ethical and deontological principles in the areas of scientific research, teaching, interaction with society and the general functioning of the University.
