Itinerary of the Salgueiro Maia, the young citizen
Around the figure immortalised in the mural on the Avenida de Berna campus, NOVA FCSH celebrates with everyone, highlighting the municipalities of Lisbon, Castelo de Vide, and Santarém – places linked to Maia’s itinerary – and the Army. This “Itinerary Salgueiro Maia, the Young Citizen” includes the “Practical School for Citizenship” programme, an initiative in which members of the faculty put their skills in research, training, design, and exhibition production at the service of the public, in the spirit of citizen science.

Exhibition | Freedom is Passing Through Here | NOVA FCT
In the years following the 1974 revolution, art took to the streets: at the NOVA FCT library, an exhibition is being held that aims to allude to the revolutionary murals that have been painted over the years in various Portuguese cities, towns, and villages – and anywhere else you could feel the dynamism of a society that demanded a change in customs, habits, and politics. Podcast Revolution and University
Series dedicated to the past of resistance against the dictatorship of five personalities linked to the creation of NOVA FCSH. The five episodes will feature interviews with former students of the historians A.H. de Oliveira Marques, Vitorino Magalhães Godinho and José Medeiros Ferreira, the philosopher and political scientist Mário Sottomayor Cardia and the journalist Mário Mesquita. According to the organisation, this is a group of personalities who “left a decisive mark in the resistance to dictatorship and the construction of democracy, as well as in the founding years of the College, which began its activity in the academic year 1977-78”. Peripheries Festival
Dedicated this year to the 25th of April and the link between art and resistance, it will be inaugurated in the auditorium of the Rectory, as part of a partnership with the FCSH African Student Centre and the NOVA Cultura programme. The performance by Dorothée Munyaneza, a renowned choreographer of Rwandan origin, will address the strategic themes of this year’s celebrations: integration, memory, resistance, and the role of women.

Chaimite on the terrace
The iconic vehicle that played a historic role in the revolution will now have a prominent place on the terrace of NOVA FCSH. Free entrance.

XVI NOVA Photo Competition
Last day for those wishing to submit their work to the competition, which this year invites the student community to celebrate freedom. More information here

A thousand carnations in April!
This month we will fill the walls of NOVA FCSH with carnations: we invite the whole community to leave their mark on the walls of the college with a stencil to celebrate 50 years of democracy. Repeat on the 15th and 22nd, always between 10:30 and 12:30. More information on the NOVA FCSH website
- 25TH APRIL
Concert “25 April, 50 years”.
On the 25th of April, at the Pavilhão Paz e Amizade de Loures, NOVA will take part in a great commemorative concert, thanks to the collaboration between CESEM-FCSH, the Brazilian Embassy and Metropolitana itself, organised by NOVA Cultura.
The programme includes a new arrangement of Tanto Mar by Chico Buarque, commissioned by CESEM and NOVA Cultura, and a new composition by Brazilian composer Guilherme Ripper, commissioned by the Brazilian Embassy as part of this collaboration. The Choir of Musical Sciences students of NOVA FCSH will be part of the show, which will include a participatory choir performing “Tanto Mar”. The loudest show!
This is a concert for young people about the protest song. The show Mais Alto!, a commented concert created for the first time by LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões and later integrated into the celebrations of 25 April, comes to the NOVA Auditorium on 11 May at 4 pm
The repertoire includes José Afonso, José Mário Branco, Sérgio Godinho, etc., performed by musicians of the new generation, such as Francisca Cortesão or Afonso Cabral, and commented by Isabel Minhós Martins.

Sons of the Revolution: Army Symphonic Band and Júlio Resende Fado Jazz Ensemble
NOVA Rectory Auditorium
A concert by the Júlio Resende Fado Jazz Ensemble with the Army Symphonic Band, organised by NOVA FCSH with the support of the Nova Cultura Programme, the Portuguese Army, the Municipal Councils of Lisbon, Castelo de Vide and Santarém, the Avenidas Novas Parish Council and INATEL, will take place in the Parish Hall of the Rectory, dedicated to the musical wealth of Portugal and the commemoration of the 25th of April Revolution.
Tickets are free and are now available at the entrances of Av. de Berna and Colégio Almada Negreiros.

Cause Effect Festival 2024
Under the theme of Freedom, the second edition of this festival dedicated to improvised music, organised by the NOVA Cultura programme and curated by Pedro Costa, has the support of NOVA FCT (through its American Corner, for the arrival of an American musician) and is a member of the annual board meeting of the international organisation European Jazz Network.
JUNE

Concert in tribute to Maestro Francisco D’Orey, with the participation of several choirs with which he was associated, highlighting his legacy in the Portuguese music scene during the revolutionary years. Organised by the José Mário Branco Documentation Centre, with the support of NOVA Cultura, it will take place in the Rectory Auditorium.
