VIRTUAL EXHIBITION “VOICES”
Virtual photovoice exhibition to raise awareness about diversity, equity, and inclusion in health among migrant communities. The exhibition “Voices” serves as a celebration of resilience, diversity, and the power of storytelling. It aims to amplify the seldom-heard voices of migrants, providing them with a platform to share the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their lives—be it on their daily routines, mental health, or access to healthcare.
The exhibition showcases a collection of photographs taken by the migrants themselves, following their participation in several photovoice workshops, each representing a unique perspective and experience. Accompanying each photo will be an audio clip, featuring the migrant’s own voice as they share the story and sentiment behind the captured moment.
This exhibition is not only an invitation to connect and empathize, but also a call to recognize the value of diverse perspectives in enriching our understanding of public health issues, particularly during times of crisis, as well as to foster dialogue and inspire action towards more equitable and inclusive communities.
After the Diversity and Inclusion month concludes, we invite you to keep the momentum going by marking your calendar for our in-person closing event and exhibition in Lisbon, on December 12, 2023. We will celebrate the initiative’s significant contributions, blend science with music from diverse cultures, and unveil exciting plans for the future.

Webinar “Smoke signals: agency in the wake of violence in marginalized and racialized urban settings”
14h30
Included in the series of Webinars for Social Justice in a Digital Society, organized by CICS.NOVA researchers Annabelle Dias Félix and Maria João Leote de Carvalho, the November 23rd session also involves Claske Dijkema, Swiss Peace, Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow (Switzerland) and Pedro Varela, CIES-ISCTE.
We live in a time of intense social change marked by the impact of technologies and increasing digitalization in all fields of social action. Despite all the progress, discrimination, inequalities, racism, among other social problems, have intensified and acquired new expressions, continuing to limit full inclusion and the realization of social and human rights for the entire population. In this sense, it is essential to be aware of the main challenges facing social justice today. It is a priority to debate the need for changes in state institutions in the public policy sectors of social action, public security and justice, identifying mechanisms and processes that perpetuate discriminatory practices, as well as the obstacles faced by the groups that are the victims of these practices. This series of CICS.NOVA webinars on social justice aims to understand and discuss the mechanisms that reproduce these practices, contributing to the definition and implementation of more effective practices, strategies and policies to combat inequalities and all forms of discrimination.
This initiative is funded by the projects DECONPOL (Deconstructing urban policing), by Annabelle Dias Félix, and Cyber-Delinquency@Child-Justice, by Maria João Leote de Carvalho, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under CEEC Individual – 2021.00384.CEECIND/CP1657/CT0022.
The event is open to the entire NOVA community. Watch it online at the Link Zoom.
