NOVA University of Lisbon will be present at the 29th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP29), which is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, until 22 November, in an event organised jointly with the National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development ( CNADS).

Pro-Rector Júlia Seixas, responsible for sustainability at NOVA, will participate in a session dedicated to the responsibility of universities in the climate change agenda, together with representatives from the University of Warwick and Monash University. The session will take place at the Portuguese Pavilion on 18 November at 11:30 (Lisbon time) and will be streamed online – available here.

It is worth remembering that NOVA was in Azerbaijan in September on an exploratory visit to explore new cooperation opportunities, and also participated in the Times Higher Education University Impact Forum, a preparatory event for this COP 29, where Pro-Rector Júlia Seixas was a keynote speaker.

This year, the Portuguese Pavilion at COP29 is chaired by the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, under the theme “Investing in a Greener Future Together: It’s Worth It“. The Portuguese delegation is organising 55 initiatives focusing on areas such as climate action, energy, biodiversity and international cooperation, reinforcing Portugal’s commitment to global sustainability.

COP29, which brings together representatives from 197 countries and the European Union, is seen as a crucial moment for advancing commitments to reduce emissions by 2030 and climate finance ahead of COP30, to be held in Brazil in 2025.
