Professor António Marques was, for several years, President of the Scientific Council, a position he held in a transformative way for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH).

He was one of the founders and, for more than 20 years, the Director of NOVA’s Institute of Philosophy, a research unit that, since its foundation in 1993, initially under the name Institute of Philosophy of Language, has always been classified as excellent by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

His doctoral thesis – ‘Organism and System in Kant’, 1987 – established him as a specialist in Immanuel Kant, one of the main thinkers of the Enlightenment, a status he soon gained and never lost, not only nationally but also internationally.

Professor António Marques was also notable for his translation, together with Valério Rohden, of Kant’s ‘Critique of the faculty of judgement’ and for organising the Portuguese edition of Friedrich Nietzsche’s works.

His thoughts on Nietzsche’s perspectivism and, more recently, on Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy are of inestimable scientific value.
