Full Professor at NOVA Medical School between 1996 and 2006, Professor António Rendas was Dean of this school and, between 2007 and 2017, Rector of NOVA University Lisbon.
He was an advisor to the World Health Organisation in the areas of medical education and specialised training, coordinator of the project responsible for introducing the problem-based learning method in medical education in Portugal, in collaboration with the Department of Medical Education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
As a member of the International Scientific Commission for the monitoring of Medical Education, Professor António Rendas provided guidance for the Health Mission Group, which was responsible for evaluating new medical school projects in Portugal.
Professor António Rendas was a member of the taskforce that, within the scope of the Higher Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation, analised the adaptation of the Bologna process to the Medicine course in 2004, and was also President of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities.
He is currently a member of the Aga Khan University Board of Trustees; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Higher Education Accreditation and Evaluation Agency (A3ES), and a member of the Fundação Oriente Board of Trustees.
Professor António Rendas is highly recognised, both nationally and internationally: in 1987 he was honoured by the French Republic with the rank of Chevalier de l’ Orde National du Mérite; in 2014 he received the Gold Medal of the Ministry of Health and in 2017 the Grã-Cruz da Ordem de Instrução Pública.
