He is one of the Portuguese researchers with the most Artificial Intelligence (AI) projects and scientific publications in areas such as Computational Reasoning, Evolutionary Game Theory, Morality of Machines and Cognitive Science.
Considered one of the founders of Logic Programming, he founded and presided over the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence and is currently an AI researcher, retired full professor of Computer Science at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, member of the Scientific Council of IMDEA (Madrid) and Fellow of the European Coordinating Committee for AI.
Doctor honoris causa of the University of Dresden, his work has been honoured with the Gulbenkian Foundation Science Prize in 1984, the Boa Esperança Prize in 1994 and the Stimulus to Science Prize in 2005.
In 2016 he published two books: “Programming Machine Ethics” and “A Máquina Iluminada – Cognição e Computação”.
He has made an exceptional contribution to the dissemination of scientific culture in Portugal in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence.
