At the invitation of the NOVA University Lisbon de Lisboa, ERC 4-OCEANS, Plasticus maritimus and the research project DUST present an exhibition on the abandonment at sea of objects and materials that have been deposited in the Earth’s archives throughout history.
In dialogue with various artefacts from the modern era (16th to 18th centuries) and the present day, using plastic as an example of a polluting and disposable material that regularly ends its useful life in the oceans and on beaches, we aim to question the ancient human habit of abandoning waste and the pressing problems of marine pollution and the health of the oceans, and to understand the historical and current practices of collecting, collecting and displaying objects that were once lost and are now found.
The exhibition is part of the programme developed by the NOVA Culture Programme, which aims to articulate NOVA’s research and its strategic axes with the cultural sector and society, focusing on sustainability issues and central questions of our time related to materials, their uses and pollution.
This project began with the exhibition “Unlikely pairings“, which is on display at Largo de Campolide until 23rd October.
