NOVA University Lisbon and Hamburg University of Applied Sciences jointly organize the workshop “Innovative approaches for the reuse of medicinal plant residues: the case of cannabis”, an event that will bring together researchers from both universities to discuss innovative solutions for the reuse of medicinal cannabis residues.
With the aim of presenting projects in this field and exploring opportunities for collaboration between the two universities, the event will feature the participation of Ana Rita Duarte, a researcher from the NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT), who will focus on the valorisation of cannabis waste through ecological solvents, and Walter Leal from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, who will present a project for the sustainable use of this waste.
The programme will also include a discussion session on future partnerships between the institutions and next steps for future projects.
NOVA has extensive experience in the field of health and waste reuse, in particular through its participation in the ValorCannBio consortium, developed in partnership with the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (LAQV) of NOVA FCT. This project aims to transform medical cannabis by-products into sustainable biopesticides for olive groves.
The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is a reference in the field of sustainability and circular economy through its Research and Transfer Centre “Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management”, directed by Walter Leal. The institution is currently launching a new project, funded by a Brazilian investor, to explore alternatives for the reuse of medical cannabis waste, a sector that could reach a value of $90 billion by 2032.
