With the onset of industrialisation, Lisbon embarked on a programme of urban renewal and expansion. Technological advances were eagerly embraced to improve living conditions and satisfy a desire for new forms of entertainment. Mechanical instruments for recording and reproducing sound, as well as photographic techniques, arrived in Lisbon. Theatres opened, including an animatograph theatre. These new arts influenced new lifestyles. Cafés emerged as spaces for socialising. Artists and writers embraced a bohemian lifestyle. On this tour, we will explore the entertainment and social venues that played a key role in bringing about modernity in Lisbon.

Guided by Ana Fernandes Pinto, researcher at CHAM – NOVA FCSH, the tours are free and in English, and only require prior registration using the form on the NOVA Cultura website.
