Participation in strategic institutional networks enhances NOVA’s visibility and facilitates the creation of partnerships with high-quality international universities, also leveraging the work developed by NOVA’s multidisciplinary platforms. 

This participation actively contributes to facilitating student and researcher mobility, the development of joint programs and projects with funding, and maintaining a significant impact on NOVA’s international reputation.

These are the main networks where NOVA has focused on strengthening its position:


YerunFounded in 2016, the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) aims to amplify the voice of young universities in Europe through dedicated strategic representation and enhanced cooperation, maximizing opportunities for collaboration in areas of mutual interest and benefit. 


UNICA
UNICA  is an institutional network of universities from European capitals that aims to develop the specific profile of each of its members to expand and strengthen international collaborations, engage academic leadership, and facilitate networking among academic communities through understanding and sharing among its members throughout the European higher education and research areas. 


EUA

The European University Association (EUA)  represents more than 870 universities and national rectors’ conferences in 49 European countries. The EUA plays a crucial role in the Bologna Process and in influencing EU policies on higher education, research, and innovation. Through continuous interaction with a range of other European and international organizations, the EUA ensures that the independent voice of European universities are heard.


CESAERCESAER is an international association of leading and diverse universities with a strong scientific and technological profile, inspiring mutual learning and debates among themselves. CESAER members advocate excellence in higher education, training, research, and innovation, contribute to knowledge societies focused on a sustainable future, and provide significant scientific, economic, social, and societal impact.


Tordesillas

The Tordesillas Group is an academic network of universities from Brazil, Portugal, and Spain, aiming to promote collaboration among the universities of the three countries in the field of science and technology, emphasizing scientific and educational cooperation as a key element for the role that academic institutions will play in a world marked by profound social, scientific, and technological change. 


AULP

The Association of Portuguese Language Universities (AULP) is an international NGO that promotes cooperation and information exchange among Universities and Higher Institutes. With more than 130 members from the eight Portuguese-speaking countries – Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor – and Macau (SAR). Its mission is to facilitate communication among members for the collective development of education and the Portuguese language worldwide.

Partnerships

Increasingly active participation in various partnerships and mobility programs with Foreign Universities from all continents has been a driving factor in NOVA’s internationalization strategy. 

NOVA’s institutional cooperation can occur under umbrella cooperation agreements and/or through specific agreements initiated by its organizational units, which formalize international cooperation for collaborative research, joint teaching initiatives, knowledge transfer activities, student mobility, faculty, and staff mobility. 

Additionally, partnerships can also be established under funded mobility programs such as the Erasmus+ programs, Swiss-European Mobility Scheme (SEMP), Turing Scheme, among others.

Lancaster University

About the Institution 

Among the best in the UK, Lancaster University ranks 13th in the Times Higher Education Golden Age ranking in 2020, is the University of the Year 2023 by the Educate North Awards, and is in the Top 10 in the UK in the three most important national rankings.

Partnership with NOVA
Development of the strategic NOVA-Lancaster platform for Sustainability, an initiative that invites both communities to join a virtual collaboration space in the areas of sustainability, digital transformation, and health (link to NOVA Lancaster).

About the Institution

The University of São Paulo (USP) is a large public university (around 100,000 students), recognized by several international rankings as the most prestigious higher education institution in Brazil and one of the best in Latin America, for the quality of its teaching and scientific production (among the top 250 in THE World University Rankings 2024 and #85 in QS World University Rankings 2024). USP offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all areas of knowledge and is currently responsible for more than 20% of Brazil’s scientific production.

Partnership with NOVA

In 2022, NOVA and USP signed a new umbrella agreement to systematize a long and comprehensive collaboration between the institutions, through the exchange of students, faculty, and staff in a wide range of study areas (e.g., Scientific and Technological Medicine, Health, Economics and Business, Communication Sciences, Philosophy, Statistics and Information Management). Since 2023, annual workshops have been planned with the participation of researchers from NOVA and USP in related fields. The first joint NOVA/USP conference was held in September 2023 on the topic of sustainability.

About the Institution

Uni-CV is the largest and most prestigious university in the country, bringing together thousands of students and hundreds of faculty in a rich and dynamic academic community. It was ranked among the top 100 best African universities (96th position) according to the 2021 evaluation by the 4 International Colleges & Universities (4icu) ranking. In this ranking, Uni-CV is classified as the 5th best university among the PALOP (Portuguese-speaking African countries).

Partnership with NOVA

In 2022, NOVA and Uni-CV formalized an umbrella agreement and other specific agreements for the exchange of faculty, researchers, and students in the areas of Medicine, Tropical Medicine, Science and Technology, and a joint postgraduate program in Data Science in Finance. Crosscutting and important themes for both universities have also been identified, such as sustainability, energy, health, and social sciences, which in the future may form the basis of a strategic NOVA partnership in the region.
