Cecília Roque is Full Professor of Bioengineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA-FCT), where she leads the Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory. Since February 2023, she has also served as Director of the UCIBIO Research Unit.
She holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Biotechnology from Instituto Superior Técnico, and completed her Habilitation in Bioengineering at NOVA. Professor Roque has held leadership roles in national and international scientific societies in the fields of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Her research career includes appointments at prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of São Paulo, City University of New York, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
Her scientific work focuses on biomimetics, employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates chemistry, biotechnology, and engineering. She has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications and has supervised numerous postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students. Her research has been recognized with several national and international awards and grants, including one Starting Grant and two Proof-of-Concept Grants from the European Research Council (2014–2024).
