Once upon a time, in 1973, a new university was born in Lisbon to be open and accessible to all, in an innovative way - NOVA University Lisbon. Now, on its 50th anniversary, we want to continue to be young and creative in how we teach, research and create value for society, leaving an indelible mark for future generations.
As the Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, points out in the commentary published in the first "Novas da NOVA" of 2023 - the newsletter we publish monthly - "let us ensure that this year of commemoration at NOVA is presided by Janus: honouring our past and starting to build, with vision and ambition, the next 50 years.
Always: serving society through knowledge.
Always: aiming for excellence."
This knowing that January is the month of Janus, "the god of beginnings, transitions, time and passages" represented as having two faces, equal but symmetrically opposed, one looking at the past, the other looking at the future."
