‘Sustainability for Research’: The NOVA Doctoral School is launching a pioneering course on responsible science

8 de August, 2025

The debut is set for October, with a focus on integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into scientific practice. This marks the first edition of Sustainability for Research, an innovative and interdisciplinary course designed to support doctoral students, researchers, and academic staff in embedding the SDGs into their research projects.

With a total workload of 28 hours (1 ECTS), the course will be held in person on 8, 9 and 16 October, and is limited to 25 places. It is open to doctoral candidates from NOVA University Lisbon, researchers and lecturers, as well as students from partner universities and external applicants.

The programme covers key topics such as core concepts of sustainability, the relationship between research and the SDGs, sustainable practices in scientific research, and strategies to maximise the social and environmental impact of research projects – and over three intensive days, participants will engage in theoretical sessions, individual and group work, dedicated mentoring, and final presentations.

The academic faculty, led by Paula Antunes (NOVA FCT), comprises Júlia Seixas (Pro-Rector of Sustainability at the University), Isabel Maurício (IHMT NOVA) and Graham Miller (Nova SBE), and will guide participants in creating practical plans to increase the impact of their research and communicate their societal contributions effectively.
