NOVA Medical School takes care of the community through a broad set of interventions.
The students’ union promotes health education and training at a national and international level by developing programs as free hypertension, diabetes and obesity screenings for the general population, including several parish councils in Portugal (some examples below). Lectures as “Physical activity in oncological disease” make the community aware of the role of physical activity, from prevention to survival, in patients with oncological pathology, and “Inequalities in Health” provide an understanding of the main challenges of exercising medicine in developing countries. Another example is the informative minutes spot (Research4U) about scientific research, to promote health improvement and healthy behaviors, for students and the general public. Also, open workshops held by Nutrition team raise awareness of the population to the adoption of healthy eating habits and encourage the consumption of legumes, associated with greater environmental sustainability.

ConCO2rde is a research project focused on one of the biggest environmental problems today: carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The objective is to capture CO2 into the economy, ensuring sustainable sources of energy and materials for future generations. The project, with the participation of ITQB NOVA, uses the so-called autotrophic bacteria (ie those that, using an energy source, are able to transform inorganic substances into organic ones) to transform CO2 into biomass and other high-value organic compounds.

Coordinated by NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS), Sensing Campolide aims to engage the surrounding community around data science. The project seeks to demonstrate how data science and information management can contribute to manage environmental issues, while raising awareness about the impact of water quality, air, noise, and green areas on health.
Conducted by the research and innovation laboratory in smart and sustainable cities of NOVA IMS, the project places several sensors, whose information is later shared through a wireless network of low consumption. The collection of soil and water samples is done by a group of students from the Professional School of Geographic Sciences.
Sensing Campolide also plans to encourage citizen science, as it is preparing – with the support of the parish council of Campolide and Liga para a Proteção da Natureza, an environmental NGO – to integrate about 40 students from Secondary School Marquesa de Alorna, in the neighbourhood, who will collect data during their journey home to school, and from classroom to playground.
