Who we are

NOVA for The Globe was created in 2020 as an interdisciplinary platform to promote the dialogue and collaboration within the NOVA community across the different areas of knowledge to advance sustainability over its missions, infrastructures and services. NOVA for the Globe´s mission develops over an interdisciplinary agenda on education and research, and on sustainable practices with high social, environmental and economic impact. The NOVA for the Globe platform is coordinated by Pro-Rector Professor Júlia Seixas, and operationalized through two councils, with representatives from all Schools
The Academic Council focuses on mainstreaming sustainability within scientific and academic practices across the university, calling and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations. Members of the Academic Council are professors from each NOVA school, who discuss and contribute to strategic projects and promotes the necessary linkages with the respective Dean on issues with impact in the school.
The purpose of the Operational Council is to promote and accelerate the reduction of environmental impacts from NOVA schools’ activities, aligning with the UN SDGs, the ambition of the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal. Members of the Operational Council include staff from each NOVA school, rectory and the SAS NOVA (Social Welfare Services) working to embed sustainable practices in the Campus services and infrastructures, through measures and initiatives, like on waste management, water and energy use efficiency and resources use reduction. Moreover, members of the Operational Council are key for data gathering and data management, to produce indicators to support NOVA sustainability international rankings and NOVA Sustainability annual report.
