LÁ NO XEPANGARA is a Lusophone tribute to José Afonso, bringing together Selma Uamusse, Karyna Gomes, Isabel Novella, Edu Mundo, and Fred Martins.

As part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974, the show Lá no Xepangara honours the great singer and poet José Afonso. Under the artistic direction of Manuel de Oliveira, the project aims to reflect the strong presence of African culture in José Afonso’s life and work, as well as his role in the struggle for decolonisation, democratisation, and the development of Lusophone society and culture.

Drawing from José Afonso’s body of work, a paradigmatic example of the pivotal role of art and culture in the Portuguese revolution, the project’s main goal is to bring the Lusophone community, especially younger generations, closer to an iconic figure in the fight for democracy, highlighting the contemporary relevance and universal nature of José Afonso’s work.

The show features Selma Uamusse (Mozambique), Karyna Gomes (Guinea-Bissau), Isabel Novella (Mozambique), Edu Mundo (Portugal), and Fred Martins (Brazil), accompanied by Manuel de Oliveira on guitar, Carlos Garcia on keyboards, Albano Fonseca on bass, and Dilson Pedro (Angola) on percussion.

In the year that Portuguese democracy marks its 50th anniversary, the aim is to encourage young people’s participation, fostering reflection and a deeper understanding of José Afonso’s life and work, as well as the values of the 25th of April.

The project Lá no Xepangara – African Culture in José Afonso is supported by the “Portuguese Republic – Culture/Directorate-General for the Arts” and the “Commission for the 50th Anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution,” as part of the “Art for Democracy” partnership support programme.
