Dmitri Shostakovich composed Symphony No. 10 in 1953, immediately after Stalin’s death. For this reason, it is often seen as a reaction to this event.
However, it has recently been discovered that the composition of the 3rd movement may have been inspired by his passion for a woman. This adds to the mysteries and ambiguities surrounding the Russian musician’s legacy.
Before performing such an emblematic symphony from the 20th century repertoire, and as an aperitif, the students of the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana and the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra will let us listen to the short Festive Overture – a piece Schostakovich composed the following year for a concert that was to take place at the Bolshoi Theatre on the same day as the 37th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.
Free tickets are available for the NOVA community upon confirmation by email to relacoespublicas@metropolitana.pt by 18:00 on Tuesday 28 January.
