Mobility outside of Europe

International Credit Mobility (ICM) – KA171 Erasmus+

Over more than 30 years, the European Union has funded the Erasmus program, which has enabled over four million European students to spend part of their studies abroad at another Higher Education Institution (HEI) in a Program Country.

Since 2015, Erasmus+ has funded projects of International Credit Mobility (ICM). ICM can be defined as a limited period of study or training abroad (within the scope of ongoing studies at a home institution) for the purpose of obtaining ECTS. After the mobility phase, students return to their home institution, where the ECTS are recognized, and they complete their studies.

In this manner, under the ICM, a HEI in a Partner Country can send its students or staff to a partner HEI in a Program Country, and vice versa. International mobility of students and staff is open to participants from a HEI in Partner Countries with which an inter-institutional agreement has been established with the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA).

Individuals Type of mobility Physical mobility period
Students (Bachelor, Master and Doctoral cycle) Studies (SMS) 5 to 30 days (short-term doctoral mobility or if part of blended mobility)

60 days to 12 months (long-term)

Traineeship (STT)
Staffs Academic (STA) 5 to 60 days
Training (STT)

Unlike other programs, there is no complementary grant (top-up) for internship mobility.

Application: After verifying that you meet the requirements for a scholarship and knowing the type of program, level of mobility, and field of study you wish to apply for, as well as the documents required for each level of mobility and target group, you should fill out the online application form, upload all necessary documents, and finalize your application.

Validation by the Home University: After the deadline, your application will be validated by your home university regarding eligibility criteria such as language proficiency, mandatory documents, etc. If your application is deemed ineligible, you will be notified via email.

Assessment by the Host University: If your application is considered inadmissible, you will be informed via email.

Selection: The Selection Committee will meet and make the final selection of scholarships based on academic merit criteria, also considering cross-cutting requirements such as balanced distribution of scholarships among partner universities, gender balance, and effective participation of disadvantaged individuals. If your application is not selected for a scholarship or included in the reserve list, you will be informed of the reasons and given at least one week to appeal this decision of the Selection Committee.

Confirmation by Home and Host Universities: The final selection result will be communicated to the home and host universities, which will confirm the list of selected candidates.

Notification of Award Decision: All selected candidates will be informed of the award decision by email. Selected candidates will have a maximum of seven days to accept or reject the offered scholarship. Candidates on the reserve list may be notified if selected candidates refuse or drop out of their scholarships.

Scholarship Contract: All selected candidates must sign a scholarship contract specifying their rights and obligations regarding the grant. Subsequently, the host universities will initiate admission procedures for their future grantees and will send the necessary Invitation Letters for visa application (if required). At NOVA, the scholarship payment is made after the submission of mandatory documentation and signing of the Scholarship Contract. Payment may take from two weeks to one month. After completing the mobility, the participant must submit all final documentation; otherwise, reimbursement of the scholarship may be requested.

ATTENTION: Please note that if a selected candidate is subsequently identified as ineligible, they will have to reimburse the costs incurred for the mobility up to that moment.

Opportunities

The AMIGO Consortium – Environment and Management was created in 2017 on the initiative of 5 higher education institutions (HEIs) belonging to the Network of Environmental Studies of Portuguese-speaking Countries (REALP). It is coordinated by the University of Évora. The aim is to consolidate academic and professional exchange of human resources through mobility of students, professors, and technicians.

At NOVA, the partner faculty is the Faculty of Science and Technology (NOVA FCT).

For more information: https://www.erasmusamigo.uevora.pt/ .

The ICM NOVA is the Institutional ICM of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. The approved countries vary from edition to edition, and the project supports short-term mobility for students, academic staff, and administrative staff.

Several faculties of NOVA participate in this project.

The last edition was as follows: https://www.up.pt/icmunl2020/

The JAMIES Consortium is coordinated by the University of Minho and aims to carry out student, teaching, and non-teaching staff mobilities to Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia. The Portuguese HEIs in the consortium are University of Minho (Coordinator), University of Algarve, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, University of Porto, and University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.

Several faculties of NOVA participate in this Consortium.

The Mare Nostrum is a consortium that promotes mobilities with Partner Countries of the Mediterranean, in both directions (in and out), reinforcing cooperation beyond European borders. It allows students and staff to enhance their capabilities, skills, and contribute to their academic and professional growth. It is coordinated by the University of Algarve and includes the University of Évora, the University of Porto, and NOVA University Lisbon.

Several faculties of NOVA participate in this Consortium.

The Merging Voices (MV) is a consortium coordinated by NOVA and composed of three other Portuguese institutions: University of Porto, University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, and University of Algarve (UAlg).

The MV aims to continue international cooperation among institutions, increase the visibility of the quality of education provided by Portuguese institutions outside of Europe, offer new mobility opportunities to students to promote their personal and academic growth, and provide training mobility experiences for academic and administrative staff.

Several faculties of NOVA participate in this Consortium.

With the aim of promoting artistic capacity and fostering critical thinking in the Portuguese-speaking African Countries and Timor-Leste (PALOP-TL), this is a mobility program coordinated by the AULP (Association of Portuguese Language Universities) and aimed at student and teacher mobilities.

The program runs for mobilities between February 2023 and July 2025, with student mobilities lasting one academic semester and teacher mobilities lasting one week.

NOVA’s faculty involved in this project is the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH).
