Several NOVA schools, institutes and strategic platforms will ensure the University’s presence in three of the locations where activities will take place in what is considered the largest annual celebration of science – here and across Europe, as it takes place simultaneously in more than 30 countries and 300 cities.
The 2024 edition of the European Researchers’ Night, an event promoted by the European Commission since 2005, will take place this Friday the 27th and will be dedicated to science for global challenges. Admission is free.
NOVA FCT
On 27 September, between 5 pm and midnight, the National Museum of Natural History and Science, the Lisbon Botanical Garden and the Príncipe Real Garden will host activities aimed at bringing science closer to the general public.
NOVA FCT will take part in more than 30 activities, from building 3D structures based on the concept of tensegrity, to transforming waste into valuable products. With fun proposals, games and demonstrations, we will show you the best of what is being done at NOVA FCT.
ITQB NOVA
The European Researchers’ Night will also pass through Oeiras Marina, where another meeting point for scientists and the general public will take place.
Organised by ITQB NOVA, in partnership with Oeiras City Hall, the event will feature several interactive and educational activities to present science and scientists.
With inclusion as a backdrop, this European Researchers’ Night aims to highlight the importance of less represented voices and the role of society and schools in scientific research.
IHMT NOVA
The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – IHMT NOVA will also be present at the Marina de Oeiras between 16:00 and 22:00, represented by several researchers promoting a series of projects as diverse as MosquitoWEB or Antibiotic Resistance.
ENSP NOVA
NOVA’s National School of Public Health will also be present at the event, which will take place at the Knowledge Pavilion – Centro Ciência Viva, where it will seek to answer two major questions: Does the configuration of spaces influence our health? What about the design of public spaces?
By watching a short film and taking part in quizzes, it will be possible to explore with ENSP NOVA researchers the characteristics of healthy communities and how living environments influence the incidence of disease and the sustainability of life on the planet.
NOVA Medical School
The NOVA Medical School will take part in the three locations announced for the Lisbon district. In a playful and fun way, more than 30 researchers and students will challenge people of all ages to discover research into the future of health. At the National Museum of Natural History and Science (5pm – 12pm), at Oeiras Marina (4pm – 10pm) and at the Knowledge Pavilion (7.30pm – 12pm).
EUTOPIA_HEALTH
The EUTOPIA_HEALTH project, funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe program, and in which Nova University Lisbon is a partner, will be presented at the European Researchers’ Night in Lisbon and Oeiras.
In addition to sharing general information about the project’s activities for the coming years in some NOVA FCT stalls at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon (MUHNAC-ULisboa), we will highlight a Citizen Science project at the Oeiras Marina. This project, led by ITQB NOVA, will be launched in the coming months, and aims to monitor beach water quality, counting on everyone’s active participation!
NOVA Institute for Medical Biology Systems – NIMSB
The NOVA Institute for Medical Biology Systems – NIMSB will make its debut at this European Researchers’ Night in Marina de Oeiras, where it will present an interactive table dedicated to exploring current and relevant topics in the field of health, addressing topics such as precision medicine or the application of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Before the presentations, an anonymous questionnaire will be conducted to assess the public’s prior knowledge of the topics being discussed. This will be followed by brief, informative talks on each of the subjects.
The stand will also feature interactive games, both on the computer and tabletop versions, focused on Precision Medicine and Artificial Intelligence, giving participants a playful and practical way to deepen their understanding of the themes covered.
At the end, informative leaflets will be distributed, tailored to different age groups: one for younger audiences and another for adults, explaining the topics discussed during the session.
