Doing good for health and environment

5 de May, 2023

For this purpose, an eco-island was installed on the 1st floor of Tower B with three containers for depositing batteries, small equipment, and lamps.

The correct recycling of equipment reduces the amount of electronic waste harmful to the environment and human health. The action mobilized the academic community and raised awareness of the importance of recycling and the proper disposal of electrical and electronic equipment, also helping to promote better healthcare provision by supporting the IPO.

In total, through this partnership with Associação Electrão | Confiar para Reciclar, 1952 kg of electrical equipment waste was collected, with household appliances being the most collected equipment.

Ecological criteria in NOVA public procurement, aligned with the Portuguese ECO360 strategy

Administrators and heads of procurement departments from all NOVA schools met on March 23 with experts from the Portuguese Environmental Agency and FCT NOVA to explore the adoption of ecological criteria in procurement, in line with the national strategy ECO360.

From catering to cleaning services, from electronic equipment to print paper to name few examples, there are many opportunities to include environmental criteria into the acquisition processes with impact on the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions, on resource efficiency and on the reduction of costs, mainly when taking the product life cycle.

NOVA is building on expertise to develop a plan with targets on green procurement procedures, impacts achieved and reporting practices. By using its purchasing power to choose products and services with less environmental impact, NOVA University makes an important contribution to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns and stimulate eco-innovation in industry and suppliers.

This initiative contributes directly to target 12.7 of SDG 12 Responsible consumption and production.
