Two projects of fundamental and applied research that can help save lives in the fight against cancer and other pathologies, coordinated by NOVA University Lisbon, were distinguished with European Union funding in the European Competition Twinning 2020, adding three million euros for a period of three years.

Health-related initiatives with local communities

NOVA Medical School takes care of the community through a broad set of interventions.

The students’ union promotes health education and training at a national and international level by developing programs as free hypertension, diabetes and obesity screenings for the general population, including several parish councils in Portugal (some examples below). Lectures as “Physical activity in oncological disease” make the community aware of the role of physical activity, from prevention to survival, in patients with oncological pathology, and “Inequalities in Health” provide an understanding of the main challenges of exercising medicine in developing countries. Another example is the informative minutes spot (Research4U) about scientific research, to promote health improvement and healthy behaviors, for students and the general public. Also, open workshops held by Nutrition team raise awareness of the population to the adoption of healthy eating habits and encourage the consumption of legumes, associated with greater environmental sustainability.

On the day the Nobel Foundation honoured Ales Bialiatski, from Belarus, the human rights organisations Memorial, from Russia, and the Civil Liberties Centre, from Ukraine, it is worth remembering that, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, NOVA continues to support the Ukrainian people and students interested in continuing their studies: at this moment, 14 are already effectively enrolled in our schools with the emergency humanitarian student status; more than 600 have expressed their interest in applying.

Training network on CO2 conversion

ConCO2rde is a research project focused on one of the biggest environmental problems today: carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The objective is to capture CO2 into the economy, ensuring sustainable sources of energy and materials for future generations. The project, with the participation of ITQB NOVA, uses the so-called autotrophic bacteria (ie those that, using an energy source, are able to transform inorganic substances into organic ones) to transform CO2 into biomass and other high-value organic compounds.
