Health-related initiatives with local communities

NOVA Medical School takes care of the community through a broad set of interventions.

The students’ union promotes health education and training at a national and international level by developing programs as free hypertension, diabetes and obesity screenings for the general population, including several parish councils in Portugal (some examples below). Lectures as “Physical activity in oncological disease” make the community aware of the role of physical activity, from prevention to survival, in patients with oncological pathology, and “Inequalities in Health” provide an understanding of the main challenges of exercising medicine in developing countries. Another example is the informative minutes spot (Research4U) about scientific research, to promote health improvement and healthy behaviors, for students and the general public. Also, open workshops held by Nutrition team raise awareness of the population to the adoption of healthy eating habits and encourage the consumption of legumes, associated with greater environmental sustainability.

NOVA contra a violência e a guerra

No dia em que a Fundação Nobel distinguiu Ales Bialiatski, da Bielorrússia, e as organizações de defesa dos direitos humanos Memorial, da Rússia, e Centro de Liberdades Civis, da Ucrânia, vale a pena recordar que, desde o início da guerra na Ucrânia, a NOVA continua a apoiar o povo ucraniano e os seus estudantes interessados em prosseguir os seus estudos: neste momento, há 14 inscritos nas nossas escolas com estatuto de estudante em emergência por razões humanitárias e mais de 600 manifestaram o seu interesse em inscrever-se.

Training network on CO2 conversion

ConCO2rde is a research project focused on one of the biggest environmental problems today: carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The objective is to capture CO2 into the economy, ensuring sustainable sources of energy and materials for future generations. The project, with the participation of ITQB NOVA, uses the so-called autotrophic bacteria (ie those that, using an energy source, are able to transform inorganic substances into organic ones) to transform CO2 into biomass and other high-value organic compounds.

Partnership for Science Education

To fill that gap, Nova SBE launched, through the Westmont Institute for Tourism and Hospitality and the Data Science Knowledge Center, a platform called With Africa. It aims to develop tools to monitor the tourism sector, to disseminate useful knowledge to business policies and strategies, and also to stimulate a space for active collaboration between organizations.
