With the exhibition What a Man is Capable of, which for the first time presents a selection of José Mário Branco’s collection, under the care of NOVA, to the public, the NOVA Culture Programme kicks off the Liberty Cycle at NOVA, part of the University’s celebrations of the 25th of April.
Over four months, from September to December, the cycle is dedicated to exploring the legacy of the 25th of April in Portuguese music and the dialogues between music and freedom in the work of younger Portuguese, Brazilian, and African artists with a strong connection to protest songs.
In addition to the exhibition, the cycle includes three concerts, taking audiences on a journey from José Afonso’s Mozambique, through the Brazil of Luso-Brazilian artist Luca Argel, and ending at Benjamim’s Berlengas.
On the 10th of October, the concert Lá No Xepangara pays tribute to José Afonso and the presence of African culture in his work, bringing together Manuel de Oliveira, Selma Uamusse, Karyna Gomes, Isabel Novella, Edu Mundo, and Fred Martins. This is the debut performance in Lisbon (tickets here).
On the 7th of November, Luso-Brazilian musician Luca Argel presents his new album Visita in an intimate voice and piano format, alongside Bahian pianist Pri Azevedo (tickets here).
On the 12th of December, Benjamim performs solo in a special concert to close the year in which he released the album As Berlengas, experimenting with new songs on stage.
Tickets are available at a special price for the entire NOVA community.
