Universidade NOVA de Lisboa is granting the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology of South Africa. The ceremony will take place on 14 July at 11.30 am at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT NOVA), Caparica Campus, and willl have the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Doctor Manuel Heitor who will give the laudation to the awardee. The ceremony ends with a speech by the Rector of NOVA.
Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor has been the Minister of Science and Technology of the Republic of South Africa since May 2014. Previously, she was the Minister of Education (2004-2009); Minister of Science and Technology (2009-2012) and Minister of Home Affairs (2012-2014). Currently, she is also the Deputy Chairperson of Joint Education Trust Board and National Director of Black Management Forum.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Pandor has a Master degree in Education from the University of London and another in General Linguistics from the University of Stellenbosch. She started her career in Education in the eighties as a Professor, and taught in institutions as Ernest Bevin School, Taung College of Education, University of Bophuthatswana and the University of Cape Town. In 1994 she became a member of the Parliament and later, in 2002, she became a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress. Her career shows a progressive engagement with educational issues, demonstrating an effort towards promotion of science and technology as instruments of development in South Africa and in the region of Sub-Saharan Africa.
