NOVA Institute of Art and Technology (NOVA IAT) aims to develop artistic creation, products and services that incorporate a dimension of technology-based aesthetic or design in all their forms, through training, research, innovation and the provision of services, in an international context of excellence.
Fulfilling this mission means considering innovative ways in which art, in its interface with technology, has taken on and enhanced the challenges of the contemporary world, namely those related to social justice, ecological sustainability and economic development, underlining the importance of the dynamic relationship between the social sciences, art, culture and technology in solving and overcoming these challenges.
Considering NOVA's mission to serve society, locally and globally, through knowledge developed from excellent teaching and research, with a high social and economic impact, the creation of the Institute of Art and Technology, resulting from a consortium between FCT and FCSH, is conceived to contribute to the fulfilment of this mission and also to fill an important gap, given that in the Greater Lisbon region there is no centre for artistic creation that simultaneously enhances and transfers technology linked to the Arts.
NOVA IAT will invest in qualified training and laboratory-based research (problem based & project driven), geared towards the development of project research, creation and production, in different artistic fields and integrating a strong technological component. Thus, the main areas of activity of NOVA IAT are Training, Research, Innovation and Provision of Services.
Short courses on subjects such as Contemporary Artistic Practices, Photography, Digital and 3D Animation, Art and Creative Leadership, Designing Inclusive Spaces, Directing and Cinematography, and Post-production, among others, which can be converted into credits for NOVA and other partner universities.
Will contribute with credits (ECTS) to Study Cycles that already exist at FCT (e.g. Master in Conservation and Restoration and Master in Art and Glass Science), at FCSH (e.g. Master in Performing Arts, Master in Musical Arts and PhD in Art Studies: Arts and Mediations) and both (e.g. joint PhD in Digital Media). NOVA IAT also provides for the creation of a master's and a doctoral degree to serve as an anchor to its transversal activity.
