Artur Santos Silva was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

The ceremony was chaired by NOVA's Rector, Professor António Rendas, and was attended by Maria Fernanda Rollo, Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education and Associate Professor with Aggregation of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of NOVA, who gave the laudation. The patron was Manuel Nunes da Ponte, Professor of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of NOVA.

For the Rector of NOVA "awarding this title is absolutely fair and having Dr Artur Santos Silva here with us is a privilege. Our laureate has a brilliant career and we honor him in recognition of his career and his contribution to the cultural, social and economic development of Portugal."

Artur Santos Silva recently finished his mandate as President of the Board of Directors of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. He holds a degree in Law from the Universidade de Coimbra, and chaired the General Council of this institution (2009/2012).

Among the various positions he has held are those of Chairman of the Board of Directors of BPI (2004/2017), the National Commission for the Celebrations of the Centenary of the Republic (2008/2011) and the Board of Founders of Casa da Música (2006 / 2012). He was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Portugal (1977/78) and Secretary of State of the Treasury (1975/76).

This year, Artur Santos Silva was decorated with the “Grã-Cruz da Ordem Militar de Sant'lago da Espada”, which adds to other national and international distinctions. In France, in 2008, he was awarded the "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur" and in 1996 the "Ordre Nationale du Mérit". In 1998 he was awarded in Spain with the “Orden del Merito Civil”.

This was the hundredth time that NOVA attributed this recognition, something that has been happening since 1979, honoring several personalities that stood out in different areas.

The Colloquium "The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and NOVA - shared paths" took place before the ceremony.
