NOVA University Lisbon mourns the death of Professor José Rueff 

NOVA is deeply saddened by the death of Professor José Rueff Tavares, a prominent figure in our academic community. 

The Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, and the Director of the NOVA Medical School (NMS), Helena Canhão, express their sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Professor José Rueff at this moment of grief.   

Coordinator of the Centre for Toxicogenomics and Human Health at NMS since 2015, José Rueff played a fundamental role in the history of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, being part of the Rectorate team from 1992 to 1999 and from 2003 to 2007. 

Throughout his career, he has been internationally recognised for his exemplary work and has received several awards, including the 'Stimulus to Excellence Award from the Science and Technology Foundation, the Burdinola Prize for Molecular Genetics, and the Piaui Prize for Medical Sciences, among others. 

The author of 220 research papers published in international journals, his extensive scientific production also testifies to his commitment to the advancement of knowledge and science. 

José Rueff has also played an important role as an expert in several international committees, contributing to the regulation and safety of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic substances.
