In a multidisciplinary environment, this course aims to provide health professionals with the acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in the application of statistical methods that are most used in health, medical research and epidemiology.

The course covers interdisciplinary areas taught by Doctoral Professors of six Organizational Units of excellence of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in a program with unique characteristics in the Lusophone space of higher education.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University and the Universidade Aberta jointly offer a PhD Programme in Medieval Studies, taught via e-learning, with a brief on site component (a week of intensive study).

In the Programme the interdisciplinary training assumes a central role and the thesis will compulsorily have to be developed in two different areas of specialisation.

Candidates must have knowledge of Portuguese (mainly reading skills), although the activities within the PhD programme (participation in discussions, reports and seminar papers) may be delivered in Spanish, French or English.

The objectives of the Masters in English Language Teaching include:

  • To develop knowledge in the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL);
  • To promote digital literacy and intercultural communication;
  • To discover new methodologies in TEFL;
  • To mobilize and apply forms of scientific, cultural and pedagogical knowledge acquired through the development of learning and assessment methods.
Tuberculosis and other mycobacteria


Despite all the efforts, human and technical, put in the fight against tuberculosis, it continues to claim millions of lives every year. The emergence of forms resistant to antibiotics, particularly multidrug resistant and extensively resistant tuberculosis, is now a global threat. On the other hand, opportunistic infections caused by other species of mycobacteria, with a significant impact on immunocompromised patients, increase. This course addresses the most significant aspects of tuberculosis and other mycobacterioses, including their laboratory diagnosis and clinical application.

Specialization Courses | Epidemiology

6 modules corresponding to 6 classes | 5 ECTS

This course aims to introduce the basic concepts of epidemiology. By basic concepts we mean those that allow the informed and critical reading of epidemiological studies, as well as the calculation, interpretation and correct use of epidemiological terms and concepts.

The course consists of six modules corresponding to six classes, ranging from the introduction to epidemiology to the approach of bioethics and epidemiology.

General Parasitology

4 months | 2 ECTS

This course aims to provide training in the most important aspects of parasitology, mainly from a medical perspective.

Main goals include:

  • Explain essential concepts used in parasitology;
  • Describe and name the major ectoparasites and parasites helminths and protozoa;
  • Use relevant bioinformatic resources in parasitology;
  • Interpreting phylogenetic trees of parasites and their hosts.
