NOVA University Lisbon marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The annual celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on December 3rd, aims to promote the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, in all spheres of society.

This commitment has been reinforced by the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in 2006, and by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The theme chosen by the United Nations (UN) to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 2023 is “Unity in action to save and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities". In line with its vision of being a global and civic university, NOVA University Lisbon is observing this important date to highlight the need to promote a more inclusive environment in all NOVA campi.

"At NOVA University Lisbon, we are committed towards creating an academic and work environment that values and respects diversity. The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is, therefore, an opportunity to emphasize our commitment to inclusion and equality," says the Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, João Sàágua.

As inclusion and equal opportunities are an integral part of its values and essential to achieving its mission, NOVA intends to continue eliminating the physical and cultural barriers that still exist to the integration of people with disabilities and, thus, contribute to building a more inclusive and accessible society for all.

NOVA's Office for Equality and Inclusion has already met with civil society associations promoting the rights of people with disabilities to identify problems and coordinate solutions.
