EUTOPIA: an alliance for the future

EUTOPIA is the acronym for European Universities Transforming to an Open Inclusive Academy

"Being part of this alliance will bring great opportunities for us to collaborate with our European partners and reinforces our mission as a global and civic university. For NOVA, this means being a high-profile international student-centred institution that serves society through knowledge and addresses today's local and global challenges in innovative and impactful ways."

Prof. João Sàágua, Rector of NOVA

EUTOPIA European University is an inclusive community of universities sharing similar interests. Through collaborative research, challenge-based learning of pedagogical excellence increased student and faculty mobility, and shared innovation, EUTOPIA seeks to address local and global challenges, contributing to a new model of higher education in Europe.

NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA) joined EUTOPIA European University in September 2021, in a ceremony in Brussels attended by the Rector, Professor João Sàágua, the Vice-Rector for International Development, Professor João Amaro de Matos, and important local and European stakeholders.

It was in June 2019 that EUTOPIA was chosen as one of the 17 winning alliances of the recent competition in the context of the European Universities Initiative launched by the European Commission. Altogether, it brings together Pompeu Fabra University-Barcelona (Spain), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), CY Cergy Paris University (France), Technische Universität Dresden (Germany), University of Gothenburg (Sweden), NOVA University Lisbon (Portugal), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Ca'Foscari University of Venice (Italy) and University of Warwick (United Kingdom).

The public presentation of EUTOPIA's Portuguese campus to our partners took place between 22 and 24 May 2022. See the video of their visit.

STUDENT-CENTRED

EUTOPIA aims to provide opportunities for students from undergraduate to postdoctoral level, and in the future also for researchers, teachers, and technical and administrative staff.
The first to take this step was the EUTOPIA Student Think Tank which has already announced the creation of a platform to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and ideas by students.

Based on student research, the platform aims at sharing knowledge and incubating new ideas to contribute to the progress of society. Managed by a highly diversified group of student researchers, it allows students to publish their work and recommendations.

5th EUTOPIA WEEK

From 27 June to 1 July 2022, the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) hosted the 5th EUTOPIA Week, promoting the meeting between students, professors, diplomats and policy makers, thus underlining the commitment of the 10 universities of the alliance to reinvent themselves to build the European academy of the future. NOVA was also there: remember here how it was.
