ITQB NOVA is an organic unit with unique characteristics in NOVA and in the panorama of Portuguese universities. As an institute focused on the development of research in the field of Biological Sciences and Chemistry, it inseparably integrates research with its teaching programmes - Masters and Doctorate. Our students are involved in research projects from the very beginning, participating in the development of knowledge and the creation of scientific, economic and social value.

ITQB NOVA integrates about 120 teachers/researchers, 65 non-research staff, 300 doctoral students and 200 master students. The strong link between research and teaching visibly contributes to a creative, stimulating and participative working environment. ITQB has a modern infrastructure, such as the Bacterial Imaging Centre or greenhouses equipped for automated plant analysis, and is the main point of the national nuclear magnetic resonance network. Together with iBET, its long-term partner, it also has a reference centre for mass spectrometry.

ITQB NOVA is located at the National Agricultural Station in Oeiras, in a framework that strengthens the collaboration with neighbouring institutions, INIAV and iBET, in the areas of agricultural research and the production of innovative drugs and therapies.

The great international scientific projection of ITQB NOVA strengthens its role within the local community. The solid partnership with the Municipality of Oeiras highlights the numerous initiatives to involve society in science and to promote entrepreneurship.
