NOVA researcher awarded Medal of Honor L'Oreal Portugal

Elisabete de Oliveira Marques, researcher of NOVA's Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, from the Bioscope Research Group (Department of Chemistry), was awarded the Medal of Honor L'Oreal Portugal for Women in Science 2015.

The project "New Generation Quantum Dots Luminescent Biodegradable for Discovery of Biomarkers and Liberation of Drugs in Biological Samples" focus on the health field and aims to develop biodegradable luminescent nanoparticles serving as a vehicle in the controlled release of drugs (Doxorubicin and Camptothecin) in cancer cells and thus contribute to combating resistance to conventional chemotherapy.

This is an innovative design that promotes the creation of a new generation of luminescent nanoparticles, biocompatible, non-toxic and biodegradable and its respective use in the discovery of novel biomarkers in cancer cells and the creation of standard drug delivery devices, effective for their treatment.

This project may contribute to improve the quality of life for patients, through the creation of a non-invasive treatment device (orally).
