Elvira Fortunato, Director of CENIMAT and i3N, Full Professor of the Department of Materials Science and member of the Scientific Council of NOVA's Faculty of Sciences and Technology is one of the seven scientists invited to the first group of independent high-level scientific advisors, officially presented last 9th November Brussels by the European Commission (EC).
This advisory group will integrate a new consultation mechanism of scientific advice (Scientific Advice Mechanism - SAM) created to strengthen EU policies for scientific subjects. The EC consultation mechanism was announced about six months ago by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science.
The mission of the Scientific Consultation Mechanism is to ensure that the Commission has access to the best possible scientific advice, regardless of institutional or political interests. It should gather evidence and knowledge from different disciplines and approaches, taking into account the specificities of EU policies development and ensure transparency.
The seven members of the SAM, with the first group meeting scheduled for January 2016, were chosen following an open call for nominations and recommendations provided by an independent Identification Committee (composed of: Professor Rianne Letschert, Prof. David King and António Vitorino):
• Elvira Fortunato, Professor, Department of Materials Science, Faculty of Science and Technology of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa;
• Janusz M. Bujnicki, Professor, Head of the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Protein Engineering, International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Warsaw;
• Pearl Dykstra Professor of Sociology at Erasmus University, Rotterdam;
• Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director-General of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN);
• Julia Slingo, Chief Scientist, Met Office, Exeter;
• Cédric Villani, Director of the Henri Poincaré Institute, Paris;
• Henrik C. Wegener, Executive Vice President, Academic Director and Provost, Denmark's Technical University.
