NOVA University Lisbon awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Carlos Moedas in a ceremony that took place at the Rectory on February 1st, 2022.

The Vice-Rector of NOVA, Professor Elvira Fortunato, was the patron of the laureate, requesting the attribution of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa as recognition for the excellence of his work, brilliant professional career and for his valuable contribution to the advancement of science and technology in Europe, and for connecting knowledge to society.

In his speech, Carlos Moedas mentioned the pride for this recognition of his work in research, science and innovation, as European Commissioner, and said “I accept this honor on my behalf, but mainly on behalf of that supreme value of curiosity and of the scientists who follow it every day” adding that “looking back, the best things I did as Commissioner happened when I gave voice to this curiosity that transforms lives”.

The ceremony was presided by the Rector, Professor João Sàágua, who defined Carlos Moedas as "a 21st century Illuminist, holder of the virtues that NOVA University honours, shares and practices, and placing knowledge at the service of human and social progress".
