NOVA University Lisbon awards the title Doctor Honoris Causa to Gilberto Gil

NOVA will award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to the Brazilian musician and composer Gilberto Gil on 31 October. The award comes on the occasion of the university's 50th anniversary and recognises Gilberto Gil's extraordinary contribution to international culture and the legacy he has left behind over several decades.

"It is an honour and a privilege for NOVA to recognise Gilberto Gil, a symbol of Portuguese-speaking culture and inspiration for several generations. Like Gilberto Gil, NOVA believes in the transformative power of education and the importance of culture as a fundamental pillar of society. This honour also represents our commitment to excellence and diversity, values that he so vividly embodies," explains João Sàágua, Rector of the NOVA University Lisbon.

The awarding of the Doctor Honoris Causa title to Gilberto Gil is also the starting point for the Brazil Cycle at NOVA - in honour of Gilberto Gil, a series of concerts and initiatives designed to echo Gil's work and reflect on it from the university as a space for questioning, and for which tickets will be on sale very soon.

The cycle begins on 22nd October with the concert "Ventos do Brasil e de Portugal", the first date of a cycle of Portuguese-Brazilian repertoire, the result of a collaboration between the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Centre for Studies in Sociology and Musical Aesthetics of NOVA FCSH and the Brazilian Embassy, in which a new arrangement of "Domingo no Parque" by the Italian composer Aldo Brizzi will be performed. There will also be concerts by Júlio Resende and António Zambujo, as well as the Brazilian musician and teacher José Miguel Wisnik.

Gilberto Gil is celebrating 60 years in the music business, more than 50 of which have been spent touring the world. He has won 9 Grammy Awards, has been named Artist of Peace by UNESCO and UN Ambassador for Food and Agriculture, and has received numerous decorations and prizes, including the Legion of Honour of France and the Polar Prize for Music of the Year, awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

The award ceremony for the title of Doctor Honoris Causa will take place on 31 October at 14.00 in the NOVA Rectory (Campus of Campolide).
